There is a significance about 8th August. On August 8th 1942, Mahatma Gandhi launched THE QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT. It was launched at the Bombay session of All-India Congress Committee, demanding an end to British Rule of India. Speaking about the movement, it was launched during the time of World War II. Gandhi gave Quit India speech in Bombay at Gowalia Tank Maidan and entire leadership of the INC was imprisoned without trial within hours of Gandhis speech. Most of the leaders spent rest of their wartime in prison. British had a support of Viceroys Council, the princely states and the Indian Imperial Police. The only outside support came from Americans. Tens and thousands of freedom fighters were arrested and were imprisoned till 1945. Quit-India movement failed because of several reasons and British refused to grant immediate independence.
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement. Gandhis words were worth remembering as he asked his people to adopt AHIMSA (non-violence) during the struggle for Indias independence. Despite its failure, the Quit India movement made an impact and British realized that they wont be able to rule India for long. One of the most significant achievement of this moment was that it united most of the Indians from different cultural background. This movement was not only about the nation, it was a defining moment to end colonialism in other parts of the world as well.
