Mental disorders , a stigma in the society, a condition so looked down at, that it is mostly ignored, we firstly need to understand that there is a wide difference between a disease and a disorder. A disease basically results from a pathophysiological response to an external or internal factor. A disorder on the other hand is the disruption of the disease in the normal or regular functions of the body or its parts.
Mental disorders are currently under a wide array of research because most of these disorders either have no cause or no cure, for example Schizophrenia, this is one mental disorder that actually has no definite cause, it could be anything from genetics to environmental factors that affect the person, but again no real cause, just the next best explanation. Schizophrenia has been divided in sub sections depending upon the case, the extent also depends on factors like the illusions, hallucinations and speech patterns etc. There are different categories available for easier diagnosis that help doctors do their diagnosis better.
We live in a particular society and adapt to what is around us, basically we adapt to the normalcy, but who decides what is normal, any scenario normal to one is abnormal to another, we do things because we are trained to think that way, now these patients have a completely different brain pattern, their gray matter is lesser as compared to someone who is not schizophrenic. These changes are not in the hand of the individual, so treating them differently is not moral as well, imagine a person who listens to sounds we cannot hear and can see things which we cannot, they have bizarre thoughts which they cannot stop, why would we, the so called normal hold any stigma towards them, is it not hard enough to live in a completely different reality?
We need a more accepting society, the way we accept our reality, they accept theirs and we need to learn to live with their truth. In fact, brain scans show a shift in their patterns post death also. Hence it is an ongoing change for them. People need to be more open to mental disorders and this will happen once they are better educated about it, awareness is a must in case of such disorders, as one helping hand will make a drastic change. The intensity of such issues is great and the general public needs to be well aware and informed about such problems for the collective betterment of society.
