Q1- Whats happening to recess in public schools today? Is it as common or less than it used to be, and why?
Ans- The recess time is being cut back in the public schools today to allow more instructional time. It is more common than it used to be today. This trend began in the 1980s and accelerated with the passage of No Child Left Behind in 2001. It was particularly widespread in urban schools with high numbers of children from marginalized populations. The administrators believed their schools test scores would improve if children spent more time on work. Some even feared lawsuits from playground injuries.
Q2- In what ways is recess good for children? What domains of development does it seem to benefit?
Ans- There are cognitive, social- emotional and physical benefits of recess.
Cognitive benefits include reduced fidgetiness in children and are more on-task when they have recess. IT benefits children with ADHD the most. Recess provides breaks in learning during which the brain can regroup. There is research that shows a relationship between physical activity and the development of brain connections.
Social- emotional benefits are that children exercise leadership, teach games to one another, take turns and learn to resolve conflicts. They also learn negotiation skills in order to keep the play going.
There are many physical benefits such as recess before lunch leads to healthier eating. Children who are more active during the day are more active after school while the ones who are sedentary during the day tend to remain sedentary after school.
