Theres a paradox with self-improvement and it is this: the
ultimate goal of all self-improvement is to reach the point where
you no longer feel the need to improve yourself.
Theres a paradox with self-improvement and it is this: the ultimate goal of all self-improvement is to reach the point where you no longer feel the need to improve yourself.
The whole goal of improving your productivity is to reach the point where you never have to think about how to be more productive. The whole point of pursuing happiness is to reach the point where one no longer has to think about being happy. Self-improvement is therefore, in a weird way, ultimately self-defeating.
Now there are two approaches to self improvement. One is that you are over excited about improving yourself. You will attend any seminar, read all the 22 books you recently ordered and what not, just to have a sense that you are continuously improving yourself. And what this does is that you do not have control over that and basically you end up with a huge credit bill and regrets.
The other approach which is more acceptable is that you tend towards improving yourself when you feel the need to. Like when you are going through a heartbreak or you just have been fired. Then you stop and introspect yourself and figure out whats necessary. And this technique is better.
You wouldnt go to your Doctor randomly every Tuesday and ask him if theres something wrong with you, would you? Instead you will show up there when you are not completely all-right. Same goes with self-improvement. Because the ultimate goal is not to chase self-improvement like crazy but to reach to a point where you are content with it.
