A thousand pillars, a few hundred years, decades of craftsmanship , one temple !
I suffer from a severe case of wanderlust. New places, new experiences, new people and new things to see and do excite me like no other. This feeling echoes with a lot of people around the world. Several people revel in the joys that travelling to a new place brings them. India as a country has a lot to offer.
From its stunning architecture to its diverse landscapes, from its vibrant customs to its scrumptious cuisine, but perhaps since there is so much to see, often a lot of attractions that are unique in their own right get pushed out of the limelight. Which is why, I decided to write about some places that I know of. And then hopefully learn about a few new others myself.
The town of Moodbidri, a small town in the district of Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka, is renowned for its Jain temples. Also called the Kashi of the South, the quaint little town boasts of stunning architecture, both houses and temples likewise. But perhaps its most famous attraction is the Saavira Kambada Basadi, or the Thousand Pillar temple. The temple is a Jain temple that was built in 1430 AD by Devaraya Wodeyar. It is often referred to as the Chandraprabha temple, since it honors the tirthankara Chandraprabha. The pillars are made of stone, and decorated with intricate carvings. The temple itself is a monument of serenity, and has withstood the test of time with poised grace.
To me personally, the place not only offers a sense of tranquillity whenever I visit, but also a glimpse into the talent and craftsmanship of several artisans that worked in this temple. It is also not crowded unlike most tourist attractions. An interesting fact is that the thousand pillar temple doesnt actually have thousand pillars, but has several smaller pillars carved in its bigger pillars that make up the thousand. But the best part about it, is the solace it offers from the outer world, because sitting there leaning against one of its thousand pillars, the blanket of spiritual energy that surrounds one is ethereal.
