The Dark Knight or as popularly known Batman, has been a staple in many of our lives. From the movies, the shows, the video games, the merchandise and the comics, Batman is a pretty popular superhero who many of us aspire to be like. But perhaps the one thing not a lot of us know is the truth behind the creation of the superhero himself. For 75 years, it was thought that Bob Kane created Batman. He died wealthy in 1998, had a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, and an epitaph that was grand and stood out. In contrast, Bill Finger had died broke, 24 years earlier and was apparently buried in an unmarked grave.
Bill Finger had co-authored Batman with Bob Kane, except no one knew of it until very recently. While Bob Kane, did technically create Batman- all the stuff we associate with the superhero was designed by Bill Finger. From his alter ego, to his superhero costume, to his beloved Gotham, Robin and even the Joker. Yes, even the Joker! Even though Finger was doing the writing when DC comics published Batman, it was only Bob Kanes name that was credited due to a clause in the contract. Bill Finger died in 1974. He was fired from the Batman side for asking for health benefits. No one publicly acknowledged this brilliant mind and the legacy he had been cheated of. It was only after years of hard work of author Marc Tyler Nobleman, that Bill Finger has finally received all the credit and recognition he truly deserved.
