I was reading on this village about a Romanian village called Geamana that is now completely buried under slurry and industrial waste from the mining of copper. And it got me wondering on whether there are places in India that have some sort of abandoned history that is fascinating, and highlights the puny nature of man, and boy did I find so many. But perhaps my top two were the Shettihalli Church in Hassan and Ross Island in Andaman.
The Shettihalli Church was built in 1860s by the French and was abandoned when a reservoir was built in the vicinity in 1960. Today much of it is in ruins, but the church still stands even after it gets submerged at least half way in the monsoons. How hardcore is that! Ross Island peaked my interest because it was quite the area of activity, up until an earthquake in 1941. Today much of the island has been reclaimed by a thick canopy of forests. And it just was a marvel to me, how majestically nature can claim back what was its! Plus it helps that the pictures of the buildings in Ross Island look like they are from the land of giants in Jack and the Beanstalk, well to me at least.
