Stereotypes are pre conceived notions about a certain someone, something or a group of people. They are fixed mental images that are often over simplified ideas or an excessively generalised concept. Stereotypes are largely prevalent in todays society and are mostly negative in nature. Stereotypes might have some truth in them with relevance to statistics, but largely they tend to be information that is false and has been modified according to ones needs over the years. India is a country that is teeming with stereotypes. The stereotypes that exist in India and about India are very large in number, and sometimes tend to be very absurd in nature. For example, a large number of the people of the West have that Indians speak Hindu, or that Elephants and snake Charmers are a part of ones daily life. Back at home, it is a general belief that all South Indians consider idly and Dosa a vital part of their balanced diet, every Marwadi is considered to be shrewd, and every Sardarji is stupid. But perhaps among this wide range of options, that one tends to have, one particular stereotype that is considered to be apt country wide, is that of the Evil Mother-in-law. What are your favourite stereotypes ?
