Sign language has always fascinated me. The ingenuity of humans to develop ways to communicate when faced with a disability is amazing, and perhaps the Nicaraguan sign language is an ode to this very fact. Nicaraguan sign language originated somewhere between the 1970s and 1980s. It was impulsively developed by deaf children in Nicaraguan schools.
Even in the Greek era, people have wondered how language originates; therefore Lawrence Osborne decided to investigate the Nicaraguan Sign language, the youngest language in the World. He noticed how the older users have more crude hand gestures, without a proper sense of grammar. He follows up with Judy Kegl as it was she who realized that the younger signers had a pattern, a grammar structure to their signs, which Kegl painstakingly decoded to the best of her ability.
Nicaraguan sign language is not only a diamond in the sense that, it offers linguists a chance to study and review the birth of a language. It also highlights how without the fluidity of knowing a language, how ones mind tends to be blank and how difficult it is to convey ones feelings. The origin and development of the NSL, by its very inexperienced speakers who molded a language without even realizing it is just marvelous.
