A fortress and a palace, hiding interiors of unparalleled splendor, the Alhambra is a testament to Spains Islamic history. Sitting high above an ancient city Granada, against the gleaming snow-capped peaks of the Sierra Nevada, the Alhambra includes a maze of perfectly proportional courtyards, sunlit patios and arcades, and filigreed galleries.
The Alhambra most lucrative architectural achievement is its rich stalactite ornamentation. This is an art form unique to Islam with domes, niches, arches which create the effect of a honeycomb composed of several cells filled with natural light and shadows. Every court and corner of the Alhambra complex bear a unique feature, each said to be more alluring than the last. The mathematical symmetry is evident in the palace, distinguished by dizzying patterns of flowing curves and overlapping angles.
The plasterwork designs across the palace form a perfect geometric web of lines, arranged niftily so that it appears that flowers and strands are caught in their lines. The Alhambras Hall of Justice or as it is known the Sala de la Justicia contains the only surviving examples of medieval Muslim figure paintings. Everywhere, sayings from the Quran adorn the walls. One inscription reads, Nothing in life is more cruel than to be blind in Granada a perfect way to sum up the magnificence Alhambra is.
