At the roof of the world or as often called Lhasa, the capital city of Tibet stands a gigantic castle that in certain times is said to appear to be crowned with flames. The Potala Palace has been a palace, a fortress and a site of divine pilgrimage. A palace that can be reached only by crossing a great ring of mountains through high passes, the difficulties in reaching Potala are all a part of its mystique.
A wonderful monument of Tibetan architecture, it took seven thousand laborers to build this stronghold of masonry. It is said the large hole created by excavating stone for the building from the hillside behind the palace, now filled with water forms a lake called the Dragon King Pool. The Potala is a labyrinth of painted galleries, wooden and stone stairways and luxuriously bedecked prayer rooms, that houses almost 2, 00,000 invaluable statues.
It was once home to religious monks of Tibet, and before the Chinese occupation still served as the home and winter palace of the ruler and was the physical symbol of his spiritual and earthly powers. It is said the private treasuries of the Dalai Lamas, a collection of ceremonial brocade robes, exquisite jewelry and gems still rest in the Potalas strongrooms. Today, however, it can be visited as a museum and shrine.
