In 1973 he moved to Newport, Wales where he met a few college musicians of the Student Union and became a vocalist for a band called Flaming Youth but later changed it to Vultures. After a year the band fell apart and he started to perform on the streets. He said that the reason for him to play music was by listening to Beach Boys and he called himself Woody after an American folk singer Woody Guthrie but later called himself as Strummer which means his role as a rhythm guitarist. He formed another band called 101ers who performed at the London pubs. Later on, he started to write original songs for his band and picked up a song called Keys to Your Heart as their first song.
While the 101ers were performing in the London pub, strummer discovered that he couldnt match his fire with them only when he saw Mick Jones from the London SS band. Jones asked Strummer to join as the lead singer so Strummer left 101ers and joined Jones and created a new band called Clash in 1976. Strummer and his bandmates started to write songs such as London calling, the Guns of Brixton, White Riot, Tommy Gun, Should I Stay or Should I Go and much more. In 1985 the band performed the last album called Cut the Crap and got split in 1986. So Strummer started to work alone and wrote many songs and acted in films such as Walker, Straight to Hell, I Hired a Contract Killer and Mystery Train.
Strummer started another band called Mescaleros and recorded four albums with them. Their first album was Rock Art and the X-Ray Style. While recording his fourth album he died of sudden heart attack. Before his death, he wrote a song 4664 for Nelson Mandela, for a campaign against AIDS in Africa.
