She was recognised and named as the UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador at UNHCR headquarters in Geneva in 2001, to educate the public not only about the problems that the refugees are going through but about the courage that they show in overcoming all odds to rebuild their lives.

Jolie visited a refugee camp in Chad to raise awareness of the tens of thousands of refugees fleeing the killing in Darfur in February 2007 and she made a trip to Afghanistan to pleas for international assistance for refugees returning from Pakistan after the defeat of the Taliban in 2008.

She donated funding necessary to found The National Center for refugee and immigrant children, to provide aid to children migrating away from their homelands either by choice or by force in 2005. Jolie announced to open an AIDS and tuberculosis clinic in Ethiopia in 2008 where her daughter Zahara Marley was adopted. A new primary school for girls was opened in March 2010 in Tangi, Afghanistan, funded by Jolie to the girls have adequate educational opportunities.
