I was in love with this song from Chainsmokers- Closer but after listening to it in the loop for few days, I started hating it. We all have this favorite song which we start hating over a period of time, dont we? Now let us play a game where you repeat the word Flower continuously for 5 minutes. Did the word just kind of disintegrate before your eyes? Did it start sounding meaningless? If yes, I guess you must consult a neuropsychologist as soon as possible! I am just kidding, relax. It is actually a psychological phenomenon in which repetition causes a word or phrase to temporarily lose meaning for the listener, who then perceives the speech as repeated meaningless sounds. It is called Semantic Satiation.
It primarily means that the connection between the word, its meaning and pronunciation starts to break down through repeated exposure to the word. When you hear "Flower" you are unable to recall what that word means, making it seem senseless. It takes time for the neurons to re-energize themselves to where the effect of semantic satiation returns to baseline and allows you to recognize the word Flower again, typically just a few minutes. Older adults, who process information differently, are less likely to suffer the effects of semantic satiation because reaction time increases with age.
So let me explain how you can take advantage of this psychological phenomenon. Imagine being called selfish and you are being hurt by this term. Now repeat that word so frequently that it loses its power to harm you. It is said that negative word can lose its power when said repeatedly for 45 seconds. Sounds cool right?
Semantic satiation occurs in our lives every day and we dont even realize it. There are so many important and special experiences that we go through every day but we no longer appreciate them because it becomes a part of our daily life. As we grow, we grow at the cost of the ability to be grateful. Life has become monotonous with the ease in availability of basic amenities like water, food, shelter, electricity etc. that we fail to appreciate them.
So, tomorrow, when you wake up in the morning, think about every single thing prior to doing it. Experience everything as if you are experiencing it for the very first time. Cultivate the habit of being thankful for the things you had taken for granted.
