On Friday, July 1, 2016, at the Holey Artisan Bakery of Gulshan, Dhaka, a crowd of Bangladeshis and foreigners had gathered. Faraaz was there meeting his friends, Tarishi Jain and Abinta Kabir, over a cup of coffee. Ms. Kabir, an American citizen, joined Faraaz at Emory University on 2015, in Atlanta; she had just come back to Dhaka after having completed summer courses. Ms. Jain, who was from India, was studying at the University of California, Berkeley and was also back in Dhaka for the summer. This was the one day these three had together before each of them was to set off to travel with their respective families.
In the evening, a group of heavily-armed men stormed and seized the cafe holding everyone hostage. When let go by the terrorists, Faraaz refused to leave his friends Abinta Kabir and Tarishi Jain displaying exceptional strength of character in the final moments of his life, rising above all self interest.
Faraaz Hossain was martyred at a tender age of 20 years. He gave up his life in the selfless act of refusing to abandon his friends from the vicious attack of terrorists at the Holey Artisan Bakery.
True courage is demonstrated when an individual facing extreme danger stands up to protect a fellow human being. Such a heroic deed was exemplified through Faraaz Hossains sacrifice, raising high the flag of Courage, Friendship and Humanity.
