With her trademark pageboy bob haircut and dark sunglasses, Anna Wintour is an important figure in the fashion world, widely praised for her eye for fashion trends, and her support for younger designers. Her reportedly alloof and demanding personality has earned her the nickname Nuclear Wintour. She was born in London in 1949 as the daughter of Charles Wintour, the editor of the London Evening Standard.
She started her career at Harpers Bazaar in London and had stints at Harper's in US, British Vogue and House and Garden magazine before being tasked with reviving US Vogue as editor-in-chief in 1988. In 2013, she became the Artistic Director of Conde Nast, Vogue's publisher.
Her first cover featuring Israeli model Michaela Bercu wearing Guess jeans and a Christian Lacroix Haute Couture top, was so unlike the studied and elegant close-ups that were typical of Vogue covers back then. This one broke all the rules. It looked easy, casual, a moment that had been snapped on the street which it had been. Anna quotes-"I had just looked at the picture and sensed the winds of change. And you cant ask for more from a cover image than that."
Because of her position, Anna's wardrobe is often closely scrutinized and imitated.Earlier in her career, she mixed fashionable T-shirts and vests with designer jeans. When she joined Vogue, she switched to Chanel suits with miniskirts. She was named the 39th most powerful woman by Forbes and one of the fifty best dressed over 50s by the The Guardian in March 2013.
In 2014, The Metropolitan Museum of Art named its Costume Institute complex after her, and in 2017 she was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II for her contributions to fashion and journalism.
Lauren Weisberger, a former assistant wrote the book The Devil Wears Prada which is known to have been about Anna Wintour. The book was made into a movie starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway which was released in 2006 with huge commercial success. It placed Anna squarely in the mainstream celebrity pantheon. My favorite moment? When Anna came to the premiere wearing Prada!
