This guy was one of the most spirited and hardcore dive-bomber pilots ever made by the Nazi Germany. He was also incredibly lucky considering he witnessed the Second World War in its entirety- he was there during the German invasion of Poland in 1939, and he was there at the end in 1945 when the entire Reich came crashing down.
Rudel was born in Prussia as the son of a Lutheran minister. He was a very keen sportsman and joined Hitler Youth in 1933. After completing the compulsory Reich Labour Service he joined the Luftwaffe where he began his military career as an air reconnaissance pilot, where he learned the ins and outs of the notorious Ju-87 Stuka Dive Bomber. With one of the deadliest pieces of machinery at his command, he once bombed the shit out of the Russian battleship Marat by using just two simultaneously dropped bombs. He came in high, nosedived 90 degrees towards the ship, dropped the bombs near the forward superstructure and flew back upward full throttle while the ships massive hull cracked in a gigantic explosion and sunk into the Baltic Sea.
Typically, pilots were sent home if they managed to survive 25 missions without dying, but Rudels badassery won him the honor of being the only pilot in Third Reich history to fly 1500 combat missions. Once he and several crewmen got stranded 30 miles behind enemy lines as the ground was too wet to take off- he was attempting to save the German soldiers captured by the Russians. He led his team on a desperate run through extreme weather, and finally confirmed the escape by swimming 600 yards across the Dnieper River to safety. It was so intense that he was the only one who made it to the base alive. Heck, a few missions after that, he got his leg blown off in an anti-aircraft fire, but this didnt seem to slow him down a bit. He just hitched a prosthetic leg and continued with the asskicking!
He caused so much damage to the Russian army that Stalin himself put a huge reward on his head. Rudel flew 2500 combat missions and managed to destroy 11 air planes, 519 tanks, 4 trains, 70 landing craft, 2 cruisers, a destroyer, a battleship, and over 1000 enemy trucks during the war. He was awarded the Knights Cross 5 times. After the war, he was a prominent neo-Nazi activist in Latin America and West Germany.
