The unexpected hanging paradox: A judge tells the prisoner that he will be executed at noon, someday between Monday and Friday. But he will not be told the exact day so that he will be unpleasantly surprised when they knock at his door to pick him up. The prisoner thinks they cannot execute me on Friday, because if I am still alive at Thursday noon, then I would know that they would come for me the next day and I wont be surprised. Hence, they need to kill me between Monday and Thursday. If that is the case, then they cannot kill me on Thursday either because I would know by Wednesday noon, and I wont be surprised. So, it cant be Thursday. He follows through with that logic and realizes that if they want to surprise him, then there is actually no day of the week that they can execute him. When he was executed on Wednesday he was completely surprised.
The grandfather paradox: If time travel was possible and you traveled back in time and killed your grandfather, your father or mother wouldn't have been born, so you wouldn't have been born, and you wouldn't have been able to go back in time and kill your grandfather in the first place.
The twins paradox: One of the most important things science has proved is that time is not absolute. Time passes on different rates depending on how fast you're moving and how much you're accelerating. In particular, time passes slower the more you're moving. So suppose if I sit on earth while you head off on a rocket ship on a constant speed for a while, then turn around and come back. We know that moving things experience time more slowly. So I'll think that when you get back, you should be younger than me. But from your perspective, the earth with me on it is doing the moving, receding and then returning, so you think that I should be younger than you. Who's right?
