IBM or the Big Blue is a company based in Armonk, New York that manufactures computer hardware, middleware, and software. It is the biggest company in the cloud computing, cognitive computing, and information technology industry. It is also a major research organization that brought us the ATM, the PC, the floppy disk, the hard disk drive, the magnetic stripe card, the relational database, the SQL programming language, the UPC barcode, and Dynamic Random Access Memory(DRAM). IBM is one of the world's largest employers, with almost 380,000 people according to a 2016 estimate.
What started out as a Computing-Tabulating-Recording Company has developed a diverse portfolio of products and services featuring cloud computing, cognitive computing, commerce, data and analytics, Internet of Things, IT infrastructure, mobile, and security. Warren Buffet's Berkshire Hathaway is the largest shareholder in the company with an 8.61% stake in the business. Thomas J Watson, who led the company from 1914 to 1956 introduced the motto THINK as the mantra of the employees. He was the person to implement sales conventions, generous sales incentives, a focus on customer service and an insistence of well- groomed, dark-suited salesmen. Its clients included the U.S Government and Hitler's Third Reich through a German subsidiary Dehomag. IBMers have won Nobel prizes, Turing Awards, National Medals of Technology and National Medals of Science.
At the Gartner Symposium IT Xpo, the world's most important gathering of CIOs and senior IT Executives, Bryan Brits, the Gartner Managing Vice President said "IBM has navigated its way through the major shifts in the face transformation and disruptions in the technology industry. At times it has led those shifts, diversifying their portfolio, acquiring new capabilities and aggressively investing in maturing businesses. It has enabled IBM to become the 90 billion dollar business it is today." The company acquires its revenue from 20% hardware, 20% software and 60% services. But with a market cap of nearly 145 billion and a portfolio of offering that numbered to hundreds, IBM has brought together a range of products, services and acquired businesses that are not very easy to integrate or to evolve. That requires versatility. Clients still expect the tech giant to be the best at everything it does, has done or will do. IBM needs to reinvent itself over and over again to respond to these demands.
The IBM Chairman, President and CEO Ginni Rometty has been named one of the 50 most influential people in the world by Forbes.
