Ahh..... the ultimate question - How can we know that the outside world exists independent of us, that it's not all in our head? How can we prove that we exist?
Last Thursdayism is the belief that the universe, as we know it, was created last Thursday. It doesn't have accurate evidence to suggest that it's true, but proving it wrong is impossible.
To help answer this, there are little rules of thumb in philosophy that eliminates unlikely explanations. They are called razors. The most popular one is called Occam's Razor: "When faced with a choice between explanations, choose the one that requires the fewest assumptions." - this theory nullifies Last Thursdayism because it would require fewer assumptions to believe that the world we live in is billions of years old, and is in fact very real.
Hence the widely held assumption that we do exist because it does not require many assumptions to believe that we do.
However, it is still possible to defend that nothing is real using theories like The Matrix Defense. In 2002, a woman named Tonda Lynn Ansley shot and killed her landlady. She argued that she believed that she was in The Matrix. That her crimes weren't real. By using The Matrix defense, she was found NOT GUILTY By reason of INSANITY, because the opposite belief, (Realism) is way more healthy and common.
So really, all we can do is believe that we do in fact exist, and not argue about the validity of it. According to Newton, "If something cannot be proven by experiment, it is not worthy of debate."
