Pantone is a company that is best known for Pantone Matching System. The main purpose of is to standardize the colors across the world. It started as a printing company in the 1950s. The change came when a man called Lawrence Herbert started working for the company and forever changed the way color was produced. He had studied chemistry and was interested in the mixing of different colors and inks. At the time, there were 60 different pigments which created a very irregular mix. Lawrence Herbert managed to turn those pigments into 12 basic colors from which it was possible to mix colors much more mathematically. In no time at all, Pantone became the international authority on colors.
One of the major contributions Pantone made was to Kodak, the company which produced photography films. It depended on a bunch of different companies to print the film, but this resulted in instability as each company would print a slightly different tone of yellow every single time. Once Pantone got involved, it became easier to print the same shade of yellow.
Now, Pantone provides a standardized color system for many different sectors like paint, textiles, and plastic.
Pantone also plays a big role in color forecasting. Every year they release a color palette which would be used by designers in their new products. This is a universal system every artist, designers and businessmen take advantage of. The color of the year is decided in a secret meeting held in a secret European city, and the identity of the people who attend the meeting are never revealed. Pretty cool, huh?
