Its almost the end of June, half a year gone by in but a whisper of time. This month is celebrated as Gay Pride Month to promote dignity among the LGBT community around the world. The end of June usually witnesses a host of Pride marches to commemorate the Stonewall riots which played a pivotal role in the recognition of the LGBT society.
Here, in India, homosexuality faces strong social stigma with laws condemning open practice of it. A significant percentage of the Indian population remain inherent homophobes, refusing to recognize the rights of the LGBT community citing reasons of sensitivity.
Yet in more recent times weve seen the urban population moving towards a positive outlook towards this community. Mass media, previously depicting homosexuals and transgenders in light of ridicule or sheer abuse have now come out in support. Movies like Aligarh and Fire have become food for controversy with their portrayal of homosexuality, demanding their rights as people. Daily soaps that remain a popular Indian past time have also contributed to the enforcement of dignity to people of diverse sexual orientations.
There have been pride marches organized by homophilic communities that have strived to promote recognition for the LGBT people as a respectable part of society. Various NGOs have worked to establish same sex marriage laws. A range of celebrities have also voiced their opinions in favor of the LGBT community. Slowly, we may see the Indian populace overcoming taboo and embracing diversity as our constitution requires.
