Growing up, have you ever had an imaginary friend? A funny, amicable creature that no one could see but you? Someone to share all your secrets with, someone who would stay by you in a world filled with bossy adults.
But then, we grow up. Our childish dreams seem to be just that and nothing more. Time to stop being silly and embrace adulthood. Our childhood companions are but things to laugh at during the occasional reminiscing.
But then there are those that build upon their little fantasy. Create whole realms surrounding it with deep descriptions of everyone and everything in this mystic land. A complex and abstract universe that slowly builds into sophistication. These worlds in scientific jargon are known as Paracosms. People often have a deep ranging emotional relationship surrounding their Paracosm. They tend to be highly attached to their little piece of fiction.
Paracosms are generally believed to originate to fulfil a childs need to belong or cope with sudden loss. Studies go to show that these people have extraordinary creative skills and generally tend to display higher levels of intelligence.
Middle Earth, the brainchild of J.R.R.Tolkien in his great works of fantasy, The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is the result of this very phenomenon. Narnia, a land that witnesses talking beasts and fantastic mythical creatures is yet another Paracosm, this one by C.S.Lewis. So maybe the next time your child tells you about their little imaginary friend youll receive it with a little more enthusiasm for hey, there just might be more to their friend than meets the eye (or doesnt).
