There are few men that havent been charmed by these large, intelligent creatures of the wild. Elephants have found their place in mythology, religion and unfortunately also in circuses. What could be more shaming to a creature so benevolent, a child of nature doomed to prancing around a ring and torture?
Pachyderms have been forced to endure a constant loss. Their homes annihilated, their food supply depleted and having to watch their own kind slowly die out. Hunted brutally for their precious tusks, the clan has seen a decline like no other. Everyone wants to ride on these gigantic beasts and watch them turn tricks. Good money exchanges hands to witness elephants balance on flimsy supports and do jigs.
But what of the elephants themselves?
Separated from their herds as calves, condemned to small enclosures with inadequate feed and hygiene, pierced at with hooks, beaten into submission with whips and flails. These creatures have high intelligence and feel emotions with almost as much intensity as we humans do, if not more. They are highly social creatures that have evolved to live in herds with well-established hierarchy. Breaking their spirits needs brutal cruelty. They can be forever traumatised and thus develop aggressive traits.
There are a lot of great foundations and organisations out to save these wonderful animals from those that wish to exploit them. They are rehabilitated and put in wildlife parks back with their own kind. Its surprising what a little kindness can do.
