Its tragic how man has sought to profit off the laboured sweat of his own kind, bringing cruel drudgery and pain into lives. Slavery has been a long established practice through history, basic human decency ripped apart because of primitive hunger for success.
America saw slavery grow into a grotesque beast, nurtured by racism and bigots. Africans stripped of their identity and homeland and crudely bundled into boats to serve their masters of lighter skin. Chained like beasts, whipped to the bones and underfed, these men had to endure a lifetime of servitude.
There were men that recognised slavery for the vile disgrace it is and sought to help those that had fallen victim to it. At risk to their own lives, abolitionists smuggled slaves out of the country into lands where they could be guaranteed a life of dignity. A secret route of passages and safe houses were established to help African-American slaves to freedom. Escapee slaves that were caught had to endure punishments that were woefully brutal and even fatal. In the late 1700s, the Underground Railroad Network that offered persecuted slaves a chance at getting away began its noble work.
The Network was organised by people both white and black, the latter consisting of previously freed slaves. It is estimated that by 1850, 100,000 slaves had escaped via the covert "Railroad". Thats 100,000 people that made their way to a better life free of abuse and discrimination.
The metaphoric railway had to be shrouded in secrecy and every step they took towards escape had to be heavily calculated. The destinations were passed on through word of mouth through agents. The stories of some escapees have been recorded, their struggle and hope a beacon of pride for their descendants.
