Today, as I was practicing my daily ritual of scrolling through vague websites, I came across a little pop-up box on a corner asking me if I'd like to be part of space nation. Of course, the part of me that feeds on science fiction was immediately triggered and I went ahead and clicked on it, bravely ready to face the onslaught of computer viruses if that's what it takes.
Fortunately, my doubts were for naught and I was led to a website boldly titled, ASGARDIA- The Space Nation. Reading through the description, I learned to my immediate delight that it advertised exactly what it sold, an actual space nation. Well, Im not talking about a domed biosphere on the moon precisely, but something that eventually leads up to it.
Asgardia (thats right, named after the Viking realm of the gods) is a proposal to incorporate a nation in space free of the military and political activities of the various existing nations on earth. It drives to make space exploration and information regarding the universe freely accessible to all, going past land determined borders and laws. They are working to become recognized as an official country by the United Nations. Recruiting members through the web portal, this initiative now has significant support and is expected to appeal its case in 2018.
The founder Igor Ashurbeyli funds the entire project himself and is being considered the official head of this space nation. The nation will work on democratic principle. A nano satellite is to be launched into orbit this year to officially claim property in space.
There have been significant doubts as to whether this bizarre nation will ever actually make it into the country list because of the heavy legal implications. Nevertheless, the whole concept has me extremely excited for what the future might hold. Heres a storybook concept peeling itself off pages into reality.
