The day began with no sign of the catastrophe to come. The winds refused to reveal the tidings of fate, merely content with cryptic whispers through tree leaves. The gift of prophecy having eluded me for so long, I remained content to live as any human and therefore the peril that was to assault me came as a gory surprise.
Humming one of my favorite tunes, I proceeded to claim my rightful place on a cushy sofa with a laptop perched on my lap. All ready to type down a piece of aspiring literature, maybe even a vague Limerick if the mood hit me. The morning went by in hazy comfort with nothing more distressing occurring than the occasional frustration at not finding the right words to make a sentence sound just so. The clouds breezed past in a slow march, birds twittered their strange songs and I went ahead with my unwary humming and typing.
My delicate senses were suddenly assaulted by a soft crooning. A sound that was a mix of an inexperienced flute player and one of those squeaky dolls that scream Mamma!.
Paying it little heed, I went ahead trying to figure out if I should use an its or its in my sentence. Always important to keep ones grammar in check. Just when I was about to turn to Google for a gentle nudge in the right direction, I heard it again, a little louder this time. I steered my eyes away from the screen and looked around in mild curiosity. The sounds began again, now clear enough for me to identify them as mews a cat might make. Being a budding cat lover, it was, of course, obligatory for me to rush to the window and peer out scanning the perimeter for a frolicking feline.
After a couple minutes of frantic searching, I was rewarded by the sight of a wee little kitten sitting on a wall, the source of the little mews. I mentally aww-ed and went back to my initial stagnancy on the sofa. When the mewing continued in a more desperate thread, it dawned on me that the kitten was probably stuck up there on the wall; all alone and hungry. Back at the window, my suspicions were confirmed. It was indeed a classic case of kitty-in-distress. Normally Id put on my super hero cape and get right down to rescue it in a blaze of glory. Unfortunately, the frail thing was on a wall on the other side of the house, virtually inaccessible.
