Beauty confuses me.

How does the mind decide something is worthy of its appreciation and something else to be grimaced at?
I have a sort of vague theory that one comes to like those things that the people of their peer group do as well. Technically, everything is an acquired taste. And by that I mean, youre bound to fall in love with the most absurd of things if people around you keep telling you just how great it is.
I mean think about it, those canvases with blobs of paints splattered around? Well, I like pretty colors as much as the next person but I wouldnt dare cough up millions for something that looks like my old paint palette. But the people who do, see something that others dont, something that excites their little brain cells. Dont even get me started on moldy cheese. Its merely processed milk that has been desecrated by micro-organisms. It stinks to high heaven and tastes really weird and yet cheese gourmands look at it like its their ultimate savior.
Once upon a time beauty was being well built and pale; now its having a bronze tan and being oddly skinny. Art-history students will be more than happy to point out all the ways in which ones perception of pretty has changed over the course of years. Its always been something Ive pondered on often. The why of it all.
