I say the word bees and its liable to cause mass hysteria and panic across a radius spanning a few meters. Its only natural. Bees and sting are words that go together ever since the fact was drilled into our wee heads back in kindergarten. Insects, in general, hold a heavy revulsion to all humans and among them, bees, more so.
I never managed to piece together why bees have built for themselves such a bad rep. They sting? Well come on, what would you do if your house were under attack?
Not so common knowledge is the fact that a bee sacrifices its life for its hive when its actually provoked into stinging another creature. The sting is part of the bees abdomen and it gets ripped out and embedded into the victims skin, this obviously, is fatal to the bee. Now wasps, on the other hand, are pure evil incarnate and are not to be associated with the peaceful, hardworking community of bees.
Simply put, no bees, no humans. That statement is in no form an exaggeration. They are the reason we enjoy the food on our plates that we take granted for. Honey production is only the smallest part these little insects play in the delicate balance of the food chain. Making their rounds across various flowers, these magnificent creatures bring about a process known as pollination. Without pollination, plants would fail to produce their fruits, fruits we eat every day and need for basic survival. These tiny buzzy creatures are miracle makers and theyre spited for it.
Humans are also the bane of bees. Pesticides, pollution and climate change have reduced the bee population to about half of what it was at the end of the second world war. The statics are alarming and if the trend continues, bye bye bees, bye bye plants and bye bye humans.
You can do your little part in giving back to these precious creatures that never cease their incessant toil for bettering the ecosystem. Flower gardens in your backyard are a good start. Just a little move on your part and the survival of millions is ensured.
