Back in 1990s, Joseph kony and his troops created havoc in Uganda. They called themselves the Lords Resistance Army (LRA). Nyrumbe decided that it was up to her to rescue the girls who had been abducted by the LRA and rejected by their family if they were lucky enough to return.
When asked what motivated her to do this, she said Realizing how lucky I had been, because I got to grow up in my family, I was protected by God, the LRA never abducted me, I was able to complete my education. For me, the most painful part is that when these children go back, society is afraid of them because of what theyve done.
She goes about telling them that she wont give them any sort of theory. Instead, she is willing to give practical skills in dressmaking and cutting. She feels that by doing so, she is giving the victims a way to get back their dignity and restore their lost childhoods.
Today, with the help of the U.S based Sewing Hope foundation; these victims are producing handbags using throwaway materials. Her new project is adult education literacy and writing program, to give a voice to the women affected by the Ugandan conflict, so they can speak for themselves.
When asked if she has any advice for people who are interested in doing similar work, she says that there is no formula for success when it comes to matters such as these. She says The only way to do this is by being present, walking with people, listening to them, accepting them, and not judging them. When they feel they are loved, they will open up and they will begin to mend their brokenness. She wants to save the world one Ugandan woman at a time. I have massive respect for you maam. You are a true inspiration. I want to follow in your footsteps and do something good for the society. I hope after reading these, few more people are compelled to do so.
