So, why am I writing about football you ask? Well, during a trip to Lucknow, i came across this unique football camp on the upper east side of Lucknow. The camp was filled to its limit. There were about 300 odd students. The Camp is called "Garib Ganj" ironically meaning the land of poor. When I investigated i found out that it was started by Anthony sir, a former Football star of India. He started this 25 years ago as a hobby. Since then, it has become a breeding ground for many footballers. Anthony sir is known for his humble nature and mild behavior even during failures. My talk with him lasted a little over ten minutes. His grey beard and torn half shirt gave away lot more than he wanted to. He said and i quote "I don't do this for money, I do it to satisfy a burning desire in my heart. I want to see India compete with the best in the world. I teach students for free, and if i find that they possess the talent i even spend money to buy them the gear. You might not know, but Garib Ganj has given India their finest players. I expect nothing in return. All i ever want is for them to come back and teach like how i do". I was left speechless. I stood there to admire the man's will and heart. I offered him some money to run the camp, which he politely refused saying "Paise ka kya hai mam, hum jigar wale hai", which meant "money is irrelevant to us, people like us have the heart to carry on". I silently walked away, with a smile on my face and content in my heart. I wish to meet him again and maybe even play ball.
If anybody has ever met him or people like him please let me know. Would love to travel and explore such people.
