Doklam is a strategically significant plateau at the Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet tri-junction. It overlooks the Chumbi valley which contains two important passes- Nathu La and Jelep La- which connect India and China. The plateau is contested by both Bhutan and China. The plateau also is important from security point of view as it makes the survey of Indian territory up to Siliguri corridor easy. This brings the security of Indias Sikkim region under threat.
Chinese attempt to build a motorable road in this area has resulted in a face off between the two countries at Doka La. Doka La is a pass connecting the Indian state of Sikkim with Tibet in China. There is additional deployment of forces on both sides of the border. India is in bilateral security arrangement with Bhutan and entered the area to honor the 2007 agreement.
This face off is different as India recognises the disputed region as Bhutanese territory and rules of engagement would be different from the previous clashes at Depsang in LAC and Demchok in Jammu and Kashmir.
The road ahead for the countries involved.
Withdrawal of the troops and also the road-building teams by China.
Sikkim is not a disputed territory and both countries accept the delineation of the boundary based on 1890s treaty between Qing Empire and Britain. This issue must be addressed.
India has to ensure that China doesn't pressurise Bhutan and ensure that Bhutan is integral to the negotiations.
India has to highlight the special relations shared by Bhutan and India and its commitment to honor the security agreement.
