Recently I had the wonderful opportunity to witness the shooting of a movie. In the minds of most people the movie industry is not a very respectable career. Stories of harassment and exploitation further increase the negative notions regarding the field. What I saw was a contradiction to all the previously held wrong assumptions. Handling a crowd of artists, the director explaining his or her vision to them as to how they want the scene to be, how they want each one to act, with the camera person making sure every shot is right, making sure the angles are right, making sure the director is happy with the shot is no easy task. Many a times a 5 minute scene in the movie takes 14 hours to shoot with several edits and voice dubbing later on. This is excluding the planning of the scene, dialogue writing, costume designing and makeup.
This experience was a revelation to me to not judge anything or anyone without knowing the complete picture. The amount of money and time that is spent in making a movie can only be grasped when you see the making of a movie live. I developed a newfound respect for these artists, directors, camera persons, costume designers and other ground staff who make sure the shooting goes on well. Yes, there are a lot of occurrences of molestation, harassment and substance abuse but a few rotten apples shouldnt make us doubt the whole bunch.
