Ive learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends on our dispositions and not on our circumstances. Martha Washington
I happened to watch the documentary on the popular singer Amy Winehouse , who died at the young age of 27.She struggled to feel normal all her life. She suffered from mental depression & eating disorder -bulimia (caused due to depression) when she was in her teens. The depression made her prone to substance abuse, soon she turned into an alcoholic & drug addict.A singer was at the peak of her success & fame when she got trapped in her own demons.A drug addict husband /lover makes things only worse.A precious life was wasted. The mental demons took her life.
Strength.Resilience.Wisdom.These are essential for our sanity. Our mental health is as precious as our physical health. In India as well as globally, talking about mental illnesses or going to a pysciatriatric doctor or counsellor is considered a taboo topic. No one has a casual conversation on mental health issues, we discuss diabetes , thyroid , piles or even constipation etc easily without feeling embarrassed but talking of ones emotional well being is not considered a subject that can be touched without being judged.Opinions & perceptions are formed about the person suffering from the mental illness. Its almost as though the person is abnormal , he or she is treated as retarded!
Accepting the fact that mental depression is a disease not a choice isnt easy for most people. The global federation has launched Mental Health Day , to spread awareness about the need to understand the problems related to depression , its symptoms as well as consequences if left untreated.Suicide is a result of depression. The treatment or advise from the psychological experts (at the right time most importantly)is what one needs to cure any mental disorder.
The rate of super successful & famous people reaching their peak of their career but unable to cope up with the challenges that come with all the power & fame is higher than the average middle class. They are often prone to depressoon & suicidal tendencies. The irony of life is wealthiest people are often the most lonely. They miss out on the family times unlike the regular urban middle class or lower middle class. In a way its true that success does comes at a price.Sometimes at the cost of losing your identity or losing control of your mind.
Ofcourse there are people who have the ability & wisdom to balance their mind. Those who have seen struggling days & have learnt it the hard way are more grounded. They tend to enjoy both family & professional joys without letting it change them as indivuals.Such humble people are rare to find.It requires a great deal of mental strength to not succumb to the pressures & demands of the riches & yet manage a simple lifestyle.
Its all mind over matter.Life was never meant to be simple & who said life was supposed to be easy.It comes with no rulebook or ifs & buts so we need to tread carefully & learn to take our mental health seriously.
