25 years from now, todays children will be the future of this planet. The onus is on the present governments to make sure the future is bright. A tiny country in the far North understood it pretty well and has achieved something that other Western countries are struggling to. Finland has retained its top place in the field of education for years. It spends one of the highest amount in respect to its GDP on education. What makes Finland the winner in educating its children?
1. Time to play.
The kids begin school at the age of 7 so that they get ample time to play in kindergarten. The kids get a playtime of 15 minutes every 45 minutes once they begin school. Most of the kids attend public school to create uniformity in learning.
2. Fewer and better standardized tests.
Keeping regular tests may not make the children smarter but make the teaching exam oriented. Where almost every other country burdens the children with tests and more tests, the children in Finland face only one test, the National Matriculation Examination at the end of high school. This gives the teachers and students to learn peacefully and for the sake of learning. They are also prepared to handle the pressures of life in future and there is a highly possibility of everyone finishing high school
3. Top notch teachers.
It is as difficult to become a teacher in Finland as it is to become a lawyer or a doctor. Supposedly ,only one in 10 students who apply to teacher education programs are admitted. Teachers are highly revered and work less number of hours. This gives them the time for lesson planning. They are well paid too.
4. The importance of trust.
The schools trust their teachers to do their job. They are not disturbed with regular monitoring. The parents trust the schools and teachers with their kids. It is seen that the people of Finland have the highest amount of trust in their Government as compared to most of the other countries. It stands as a prime example to showcase the importance of trust to achieve good results.
5. No College fee.
The bachelor degree, masters degree and doctoral programs are free and the students are not burdened with any education loans to make education stress-free.
